Nîmes, a city in the Occitanie region of Southern France, is an elegant and subdued destination often overlooked by tourists. The city has undergone a remarkable transformation in the past two decades, with pedestrianized areas, restored buildings, and a beautifully redesigned main square showcasing its Roman heritage.

Visit Nîmes in late spring or early autumn to avoid extreme temperatures and explore the stunning Jardins de la Fontaine. Combine your visit with nearby cities like Uzès and Arles for a comprehensive experience.

Must-see landmarks include:

  • Les Jardins de la Fontaine
  • La Maison Carrée
  • Musée de la Romanité (archaeological museum)
  • Les Arènes
  • Le Marché Couvert (a food lover's paradise)
  • Le Pont du Gard (22km from Nîmes)
  • Uzès (23km from Nîmes)
  • Arles (33km from Nîmes)

Where to Stay

On a budget -  I would recommend the Novotel Hotel close to the train station, it's perfectly located to walk to the city centre. Be warned this is a chain hotel, the room are very functional but lack personality and the corridor looks like you step back into the 70s. You will get great value for your money though.
